Best desktop RSS reader… for now.

I’ve read a few reviews claiming that Readkit is a better desktop RSS client than Reeder and thought it was time to chime in. I was an avid Reeder 1.x user up until Google Reader’s demise. I had it on iPhone, iPad and Mac - and when Feedly was the only game in town, the switch to Readkit was inevitable. Readkit is robust, FAST and well designed, but here’s a list of things it does poorly compared to Reeder (1.x):

• There are virtually no gesture controls with a Magic Trackpad or MacBook Trackpad
• You cannot download images directly from the window.
• The keyboard shortcuts (while customizable) do not match Feedly
• There tends to be a lag when switching to different feeds after marking all-is-read and unflagging articles.
• Support for pinboard is a little weird - saves links, but as ‘unread.’

But that’s really it - Readkit is still a fantastic RSS client and should be used by everyone with a Feedly account and a Mac. However, Reeder 2.0 is in development, the beta is impressive, and it’s only a matter of time till it’s released on the App Store. For those who don’t want to wait for Reeder (and who knows WHEN it’ll be released) should definitely purchase Readkit right now.
