ReadKit App Reviews

Works as advertised

ReadKit works as advertised, looks good and is worth the money. Not much else to say.

Useless

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY THIS IS A USLESS AP

Awesome!

This is an absolutely fantastic app for reading all those long articles that Ive saved to Instapaper (assuming youre an Instapaper subscriber of course). ReadKit just makes for a great reading experience that is a total joy. v1.0 had some bugs, but Im glad to see they were fixed quickly. Having a responsive developer who updates the app and adds new features (I can finally access Pinboard!) makes all the difference. Worth the money.

Good app, could be great...

The reviews were right, this app is more or less what I was looking for, however, it is a bit sluggish and the fact that you cant view and sort RSS and Pocket, Instapaper, etc, articles together makes sorting a bit tedious. It does work for what I need, so far, so Im not complaining too much, and gave it 4 stars. A suggestion Id like to make is to add Pepperplate to the list of services. :) If youre looking for an all in one reader, this is a good choice that Im confident will become great with further updates. It is worth the price tag.

Not a good feed reader for my workflow

Heres my basic workflow: I quickly skim new items from my feed service and send the interesting ones to my read later service. I think thats pretty typical. Heres my basic problem: although ReadKit knows about both my feed service (e.g., Feed Wrangler) and my read later service (e.g., Pocket) it has no easy way to send items from one to the other. I discovered (by trial and error, theres no documentation) that I could *drag* items on the right to the read later service on the left, but thats no good; when youre trying to get through a long list very quickly you really dont want to take your hands off the keyboard. You especially dont want to take your hands off the keyboard to perform a long drag across a large desktop screen using a small trackpad. To make matters worse, the list on the left isnt always visible--e.g., in focus mode when youre just focusing on one article at a time. The ReadKit guys can and no doubt will fix this, but until they do it simply doesnt fit my workflow. (Theres one additional issue. The little refresh/sync icon has been turning ever since I installed the software yesterday. The counts for everything seem to be correct, etc. I have no idea what its doing or why thats happening.)

Not the be-all/end-all Google Reader app I was hoping for - yet...

I like the clean lines and design of ReadKit. Not to mention, that its really got. Its a well designed app with a UI that largely stays out of your way. That being said, there are some disappointing aspects to it. First, ReadKit choked on my Google Reader subscriptions.xml file (and it wasnt a very large list anyway). Ive also experienced some random crashes while doing things like reading from an RSS feed. Theres also no clear guide given to try to give new users a way to transition safely from Google Reader; a purpose for which many are likely buying this app.

Bugs!

It wont update the rss feeds on its own!!! I need to quit the app / relaunch it for the rss fees to be updated. Also, if you add a new feed it wont show up unless you quit and reopen the app. Id like to see better sync support through the cloud as well. If I create a smart folder on one Mac it would be nice if it updated it across all my Macs. I do like the Evernote integration!

Full flavoured app, but...

While the app does more than other readers, the UI is somehow cryptic. I couldnt figure out how to tag articles (the option is grayed out), nor how to bring up the Tag Editor. I did not find anything using the FAQ on the companys website in regards to this issue, and the instructions are limited or incomplete. Contacting the support was unsuccessful, I never received an answer.

Nice, But Bugs

Really like the concept and overall it is well put together however in my experience there appear to be a few bugs, particularly with the built in RSS. Having added two feeds that way the app initially failed to maintain their read status. When this got a bit tiring I deleted the feeds but they kept returning. Finally I deleted the built in RSS service and it keeps coming back. Added to that every so often the app brings up a popup to say it failed to save the read status of a read article. The only way to correct this is to restart. The developer is responsive, I had a number of email exchanges with him on other issues, but these remain unfixed. Definately recommended but probably needs a little more work.

Simply fantastic

ReadKit is a really good RSS manager/reader with a lot of functionalities. I did not find so far a better tool than ReadKit. And for less than $2 what can we ask more?

Simple and beautiful

If you still love using RSS then this is the app for you. Clean, efficient and highly functional, this app has exceeded every expectation.

Total waste of time and money

Don’t waste your money. Although this has a very nice looking interface, it is useless as an RSS client when the “import” feature is greyed out all the time. I have been an active user of NetNewsWire for many years, and used an OPML export from NNW to try to import into ReadKit. Unless maybe ReadKit has to be set to be the default RSS reader (which I am unwilling to do since there is no menu item to un-do this action) there seems to be no way to activate the import feature. Yet the developer’s site clearly states "ReadKit can import OPML into its built-in RSS engine”. Nor have I discovered any way to directly add RSS feeds to ReadKit. So its function seems to be limited to that of an aggregator of Read Later items. The developer does not respond to requests for help. Did anyone actually try the app before voting it a “Mac App Store Best of 2013”?

Outstanding!

I’ve been using ReadKit since the demise of Reeder and for most part, I’ve been happy. The one thing that I couldn’t adjust to were the keyboard shortcuts and in v2.4.0 the keyboard shortcuts are user adjustable! Sure, there are a loads of new features and bug fixes in case you’re not as jazzed as I am about the keyboard shortcut thing but hey, to each their own. TL;DR: ReadKit is the BEST RSS reader for Mac OS X. Buy it. @Linneazzz Have you tried Preferences -> Accounts -> + -> Enable built-in RSS? Worked just fine for me. Your review is scatching and from where I’m sitting, unfair. ReadKit works exactly as advertised.

readkit

i purchased this software product today by mistake and tried to work with it, it wants me to sign in and give a pass word, when i do not have a account. ? support did not help any ……. dont like at all ………….. wast of money for me. will not make mistake again.

Not As Good As Reeder

I bought this because Reeder has laid dormant for nearly a year now since Google Reader shut its doors, with no eta on a new Reeder release. Its just not as well done as Reeder, doesn’t look great, doesn’t work as nicely. If Reeder ever returns, I will drop this and switch back, until then I may or may not use ReadKit.

Keeps crashing

Readkit was acting as a more than acceptable repalcement for Reeder until the recent updates. Now it cannot stay up for more than 10 minutes without crashing, shows multiple feeds for each site in the sidebar, and is generally too buggy to use. I’ve sent in dozens of crash reports and emailed support with no response. Not impressed.

Best RSS reader for Mac

On iOS I’m a big fan of Newsify, but on Mac I fully rely on ReadKit. In the post-Google Reader era, ReadKit is my favourite way to consume RSS feeds (synced to Feedly) and Pocket articles on Mac. It has a clean design and all the features of similar apps. I much prefer it to other apps Reeder, Feedly, etc.

Crashes far too often

The app crashes all the time. Multiple times per day and all I use it for is reading RSS feeds. It seems to have touble when an article embeds a video. It used to be my favourite RSS Reading app but now I’ve gone to Feedly’s native app.

Reeder

Works well but ...

It works very well but keyboard shortcuts are so limited. I think some shortcuts such as folding & expanding folder shortcuts are mandatory.
